Director Erica Wyman-Abrahamson brought sensitivity as well as shock-producing moments to this production, and her choice of Riette Burdick Fallant as choreographer couldn’t have been better. Fallant, a multi-faceted actor and dancer in her own right, delivers a knockout series of dance numbers with her amazingly limber female ensemble of seven (with either Pinto or WolfKlain joining in on most of them). “Cabaret” is probably known more for its stellar array of songs than even its melancholic plotline. No wonder: It was nominated for 11 Tony Awards and won eight in 1967, including “Best Musical,” “Best Musical Score“ and “Best Featured Actor in a Musical” for Joel Grey as the Emcee. Besides the title song, some of the zingers in Hillbarn’s production include “Willkommen,” “Don’t Tell Mama,” “Mein Herr,” the touching “Maybe This Time,” “Money (Money, Money),” and the chilling prediction of “Tomorrow Belongs to Me.”.
The irony is that many Bay Area theaters have been thriving during the recent economic uptick, San Francisco’s American Conservatory Theater, Berkeley’s Aurora Theatre and Berkeley Repertory Theatre all recently opened additional stages, Even the much smaller Cal Shakes was able to raise almost $700,000 at its spring gala, Unable to tap into that kind of wealth, the arts in the valley always seem to be on the edge, Ballet San Jose has weathered many fiscal storms, American Musical Theatre puppyfun - handmade ballet tutu for dogs went under in 2006, Even the stalwart Opera San Jose is now projecting a $700,000 shortfall, While the company has a hefty $3 million cash reserve, the red ink remains a cause for concern..
But if you know anything about the smartphone market, even that reduced number seems wildly optimistic, because it implies that sales of Windows Phone devices will significantly outgrow the broader smartphone market in coming years. IDC forecasts that the software will steal share from Apple s iOS over that time period. Yet there s no sign at all that any significant segment of consumers are eager to have Windows Phone devices over iPhones. Windows Phone s poor performance in the market thus far is largely due to the fact that consumers and carriers on the whole have never shown much interest in the software and the few manufacturers that half-heartedly supported it mostly abandoned it when Microsoft bought Nokia s phone division, which was the dominant maker of Windows Phone devices. Those trends have shown no signs of changing.
