The pace is slow, and the playwright’s hand is all too visible in shifting from topic to topic — it’s time to explain this scientific concept, then recap this Borges story, then summarize this other theory — but it’s to both Coughran’s and the performers’ credit that these lectures-as-conversation flow fairly naturally. What’s particularly impressive, however, is how poignantly the various topics covered in the play come together at the end, laden with newfound resonance. It’s the kind of ending that somehow elevates everything that came before.

The Rep also will stage the world premiere of “Black ‘n’ Blue Boys” (May 25-June 24, 2012), a searing tale of survival in families riddled by drugs, alcohol and abuse, written and performed by Pulitzer Prize-finalist Dael Orlandersmith (“Yellowman”) and directed by Obie Award-winner Chay Yew. She and her husband were together about 20 years. During family therapy, she learned he also was gay and had gotten married to have a family.
